After the spiritual heat of Varanasi, I headed to the crisp, pine-scented air of Himachal Pradesh. From the bustling streets of Manali to the turquoise waters of Sissu, here is my journey through the mountains.
Day 1: The Heart of Manali (Mall Road & Hadimba)
Deepak Morya
I arrived in Manali and immediately felt the temperature drop.
Hadimba Devi Temple: Hidden inside the Van Vihar forest, this ancient wooden temple is a masterpiece. The towering deodar trees and the smell of fresh cedar make it feel like a fairytale. I spent an hour just sitting in the quiet forest.
Mall Road: As evening fell, I headed to the Mall Road. It's the pulse of Manali. I tried the local Siddu (Himachali steamed bun) with ghee and shopped for some warm woolen caps.
This was the most adventurous day. We drove through the Atal Tunnel, a 9km engineering marvel. The moment you exit the tunnel, the landscape changes from green forest to the barren, snow-capped beauty of Lahaul Valley.

Sissu Lake: The water was a stunning shade of blue.
Sissu Waterfall: A massive frozen (or semi-frozen) fall that looks like a giant silver ribbon against the mountains. The air here is thin and pure—pure magic.

From the cold of Lahaul, I drove down to the Parvati Valley.
Kasol (Mini Israel): Kasol is all about the sound of the Parvati River crashing against the rocks. I spent the afternoon at a riverside cafe, eating Israeli Shakshuka and listening to trance music.
Chhalal Trek: A short, 30-minute walk through the woods that takes you deeper into the valley's silence.
Before heading back to Delhi, I visited Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara.
The hot springs here are incredible. You can see the steam rising from the ground. I had the Langar (community meal) cooked in the natural hot water—a reminder of the spiritual warmth I felt in Banaras.
